Meeting History

Dec 21, 2016 3:00 PM  Planning, Development, and Environmental Quality Committee Regular Meeting

Ms. McDonald stated the Housing Summit was successful and a great deal of interest was shown. She would like to keep that momentum moving forward in development of the County Housing Strategy and briefly explained the draft timeline. Some who have shown interest are TCAD, the Developers Round Table, the Real Estate Community, and the Downtown Ithaca Alliance in future development in the community.

Ms. McDonald spoke of a recent Summit Planning Committee meeting where they are looking for more conversation to help better reform the strategy as well as formal public engagement and outreach.

Mr. Dennis inquired if Ithaca Housing Authority was involved in the Housing Summit. Ms. McDonald stated they were invited and involved in other housing related meetings. Mr. Marx stated the federal funding for Ithaca Housing Authority has been limited since the time when they were doing a great deal more development. Ms. McDonald stated she has received the impression that they are not looking for new development and are managing what they have.

Ms. McDonald stated condominium development in New York State is particularly difficult and there have been discussions regarding legislation. The Ithaca Board of Realtors are interested as well as the New York State Board of Realtors. There may be a particular program including discussion geared towards those obstacles and potential solutions.

Mr. Marx stated the Housing Strategy should be able to provide that description, identify things that should be prioritized, and provide a scenario of where housing should go. He is also certain there will be some actions identified in this process to assist in attaining the desired goal.
