Mr. John, Chair, reported the Committee met last week and had a series of presentations from treatment providers that was followed by a discussion of coordinating treatment while someone is in jail and upon release. The consensus was that more can be done in terms of transition plans and moving people through the jail and release. The Committee also discussed factors affecting release such as housing. Mr. Kruppa reported on a positive change in the treatment of dual diagnosis and said the State agencies responsible for mental health and the agencies responsible for substance abuse haven't communicated very well in the past and it has been hard for people with both substance abuse and mental health issues to get treatment in New York State. He said there is improvement in the communication between these agencies and this is a very good sign. The next meeting will be held January 19th. At that meeting there will be a presentation by the consultants and the majority of the meeting will be spent receiving public input.
